Cerner and the IHE
Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) is an initiative by medical specialists, administrators and IT professionals to improve the way healthcare computer systems share information. The initiative:
- Promotes coordinated and consistent use of established communications standards, such as DICOM and HL7 to address specific clinical needs and support optimal patient care
- Stimulates the integration of clinical systems that support modern healthcare institutions.
Cerner Corporation was invited at the formation of the IHE and has maintained an ongoing, active role in the Planning and Technical Committees, while continuing to be a participant in the Connectathon and demonstrations.
The IHE Integration Statement DICOM Conformance Statements
IHE Integration Statements describe how systems should be designed to interoperate. They identify the specific IHE capabilities a given product is designed to support in terms of the key concepts of IHE: Actors (a role that a given system performs) and Integration Profiles (integration function). The IHE integration statements below describe how Cerner solutions have implemented the IHE technical framework.

HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 presents great challenges and requirements for healthcare providers as covered entities to meet compliance requirements of the major rules that comprise the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Act. In reviewing the requirements of the rules that can be taken as having import for information systems, Cerner has attempted to identify the most significant areas where the Cerner Millennium application suite can assist Cerner's clients in achieving their organizational compliance objectives for HIPAA. The purpose of this whitepaper is to review the major areas of compliance requirement and the role in compliance played by each major Cerner solution type based upon current capability as Millennium 2007.
